The Welsh public turned out in force to cheer for Gareth Bale who made a homecoming to Cardiff. Although he was the engine of much of Madrid's creativity and made a gorgeous cross to open the scoring, the night belonged to the World Footballer of the Year, Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ronaldo struggled with a knee problem during the World Cup and having played only once in pre-season prior to Tuesday's game, he admitted that he had been apprehensive about his return to competitive action. "It was my first official match this season and I wasn't sure what would happen, but I felt good," he said, after receiving the man-of-the-match award from his former Manchester United mentor Alex Ferguson. "It's the trophy I wanted because I hadn't won it yet. I was a bit nervous to see how I'd feel on the pitch. I think I managed to work well with the team and I'm happy with both goals."

On the other hand, the focus was largely on its new recruits, Colombia's World Cup poster boy James Rodriguez, and Toni Kroos, who lifted the trophy in Brazil with Germany. Real coach Carlo Ancelotti paraded his awe-inspiring wealth of playing talent, with James Rodriguez and Toni Kroos joining Bale and Ronaldo in a team captained by goalkeeper Iker Casillas. The whole team played a good game, especially considering they didn't have much time to prepare.

After the chastening experience of finishing third in La Liga last season, Real have stated their intention to win everything this time. They have made a promising start.
