Is Angel Di Maria Really Worth £60 Million for Manchester United?

Manchester United last night agreed to a British transfer record breaking £59.7 million deal to sign Angel Di Maria from Real Madrid. There are only 5 players command more than the Argentina winger in history. Does he really worth that much?

Cristiano Ronaldo, Luis Suarez, Gareth Bale, James Rodriguez, Neymar and Angel Di Maria

The major difference between those expensive players and Di Maria is perhaps the goals. In comparison, Di Maria failed to reach double figures in La Liga in the four years he spent at Real Madrid. Last season he scored just 4 in 34 appearances. So, once again, does he really worth that much?

 Angel Di Maria

Angel’s wildly productive

He might not be the player who’s most in the spotlight, but Di Maria is always there. He led Real Madrid in assists with 17, more than any other player managed in the 2013-14 La Liga season. His arrival at Old Trafford will instantly transform a laborious midfield short on creativity.

He also was his national team’s most dangerous attacking player during the 2014 World Cup before being injured in the semifinal. He created more chances for Argentina than Lionel Messi, who ended up being the player of the tournament.

Manchester United needs an Angel

The Red Devil has gone from choosing from Ronaldo, an ageless Ryan Giggs, a tireless Park Ji-Sung, and a then-menacing Nani to choosing from an erratic Ashley Young, an average Antonio Valencia, an undeveloped Adnan Januzaj, and an almost useless Nani. Di Maria produced more chances for Real Madrid last season than all 4 of United’s current wide-out options put together last season.

With a manager like Louis Van Gaal who’s always flipping the script, he’ll need players that are comfortable playing multiple positions. Di Maria can do that.

Ultimately, whether Di Maria will represent value for money will only become clear once he's had an opportunity to show what he can bring to Louis van Gaal's side. If his arrival can spark a turnaround in fortunes and see Manchester United compete with the best once again, he'll be priceless.
