Atletico Madrid fans have turned out in their droves to welcome Fernando Torres back to the club.

The 30-year-old has returned his boyhood team Atletico Madrid on an 18-month loan from AC Milan, who have signed him permanently from Chelsea after his initial loan at the start of the season.

Despite scoring once in 14 games in Italy, over 40,000 supporters were delighted to catch a glimpse of the Spaniard who returns to Atletico after more than seven years away from his boyhood club.

When he unveiled at the top of the tunnel wearing red and white the roar was immense. He was joined by his children, Nora and Leo.

Songs ran round and so did he, signing and kicking balls into the crowd. And then, just before 2pm, there was a huge cheer as Torres put the ball in the net at the north end of the Calderón.

Torres, who will wear the No 19 shirt in Madrid, was clearly emotional as he addressed the media and fans.

"How nice it is to return home. I have been waiting a long time for this moment - finally it's here," he said. "For me its a special day."

He was in the stands to watch his new team-mates beat Levante 3-1 last night, taking them to within a point of La Liga leaders Real Madrid. Antoine Griezmann and Diego Godin dedicated their goals to Torres with his celebration during the win.

Torres' return coincides with a crux of crunch games for Atletico. His debut may come on Wednesday in the Copa del Rey – against the club’s city rivals.
