On Jan. 10 2016, music industry great David Bowie died at 69 after fighting cancer for 18 months. In honor of the late star, take a look back at his unparalleled life.

David Bowie was born David Robert Jones in England on January 8, 1947. He formed his first band at the young age of 15, calling himeself Davy Jones.

In 1969, five days before the Apollo 11 launch, Bowie released "Space Oddity." It became an instant sensation and started his rock star rocket ride.

When the 1970s hit, Bowie launched his Ziggy Stardust stage show, where he wore eccentric costumes and bright red hair. The show and David quickly became a phenomenon in the UK.

One of his most memorable film roles was his portrayal of the sexy and mysterious Jareth the Goblin King, from the 1986 cult classic Labyrinth.

David Bowie set the music and modeling world on fire when he coupled up with supermodel, Iman. They got married in 1992.

Iman and David not only became one of the longest-lasting couples in Hollywood, but they successfully mixed business and pleasure with their stunning photoshoots.

In 2006, Bowie was awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, where he announced he would be taking a year off from music.

Days before his death and on his 69th birthday, Bowie released his 25th studio album, Blackstar.
