The San Antonio Spurs announced Tuesday that they have hired Becky Hannon, a two-time first-team all-WNBA player, as an assistant coach. Hammon will be the first woman with a coaching position in the National Basketball Association during the regular season.

Becky Hammon had spent the past eight seasons with the San Antonio Stars during a 16-year career in the league, served as an unofficial coaching intern last season with the reigning NBA champion Spurs. Named one of the WNBA’s Top 15 Players of All-Time in July of 2011, Hammon ranks seventh in WNBA history in points (with 5,809), fourth in assists (1,687) and sixth in games (445).

“I hope little girls can say, ‘Hey look! People can do whatever they put their mind to.’ It's so early to tell the kind of impact it's going to have, but we'll just take it day by day,” Hammon said. “I'm just so grateful that they value my experience as a basketball player and threw the gender out the window.”

It is, of course, the Spurs way to push at the envelope, leap way outside the box of conventional thinking. They won their fifth NBA title in June with a roster consisting of 10 international players that came from eight different countries. “I very much look forward to the addition of Becky Hammon to our staff,” said Spurs Head Coach Gregg Popovich. “Having observed her working with our team this past season, I’m confident her basketball IQ, work ethic and interpersonal skills will be a great benefit to the Spurs.”

“People have always asked me if a woman could play in the NBA,” Hammon said. “I tell them no, because there is a difference. The men are too big, too strong. But when it comes to coaching, game-planning and scheming, there’s no reason that a woman can’t do anything a man can do.”
