1.What’s in his backpack?

Kevin Durant carries a mysterious backpack to every post-game press conference. Ever wonder what is inside there? No, it’s not Nate Robinson.

According to Durant the backpack contains his iPad, a bible, his headphones and a phone charger. He’s described himself as still being a “high school kid” who likes to play video games. Perhaps he just wanted to emphasize this by wearing a backpack as well. 

2.He had a misspelled tattoo, which he later corrected

Kevin Durant completed a massive back tattoo last year and posted an image of it onto social media. There was just one small issue; the word ‘mature’ was misspelled as ‘mautre’. Not surprisingly it stirred quite a lot of attention online, which made Durant post another picture onto Instagram with the word ‘mature’ spelt correctly.

Seems like he decided to painfully correct the mistake, although he stated on the new picture that the word was never misspelled. The picture on the left is the corrected version, while the picture on the right shows the original mistake.

3.He had amazing stats in College basketball

Durant played college basketball for the Texas Longhorns, where he hit a career high of 37 points no less than 3 times. He also averaged 25.8 during his freshman year, prior to moving to the NBA in the following year.

4.He was one of only 3 players to average over 20 PPG in the NBA as a teenager

Kevin Durant averaged over 20.3 points in his rookie year for the Seattle Supersonics, after being selected as the second overall pick in the 2007 NBA Draft. He was one of only three players ever to average more than 20 points per game as a teenager. The other two players were none other than Carmelo Anthony and LeBron James. Durant also had an average of 4.4 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1 steal per game during the same season.

5.He broke the Supersonics rookie scoring record

He won rookie of the month in every month except for February during the 2007/08 season with the Seattle Supersonics. To top off the his amazing rookie season, Durant also won the rookie of the year award. In doing so he broke the Seattle rookie scoring record that was held since the 1968/69 season by Bob Rule.

6.He rejected a $70 million Adidas deal to choose a $60 million Nike deal

Immediately after signing his rookie contract with the Supersonics, Durant also put pen to paper on a 7 year deal with Nike worth a massive $60 million. This was the second largest endorsement deal for a rookie, after LeBron James’s Nike contract.

Durant turned down a larger $70 million deal with Adidas because he had been wearing Nike shoes since he was in 8th grade, and felt more comfortable wearing them.

7.He is currently the fourth highest paid basketball player

Over the last year, Kevin Durant made $31.9 million in earnings, making him the 4th highest paid basketball player behind LeBron James, Kobe Bryant and Derrick Rose. He was the 20th overall, with his earnings consisting of $17.9 million in wages and $14 million in endorsement deals.

8.His donation towards the Moore Tornado was matched by Nike and the Thunder

After the 2013 Moore tornado that devastated parts of Oklahoma, Kevin Durant donated $1 million of his own money to the American Red Cross to help the victims of the disaster. His generosity prompted Nike and the Oklahoma City Thunder to also donate $1 million each.

9.He can rap!

Durant is the best rapper in the Oklahoma City Thunder and has aspirations on becoming a music producer when he ends his basketball career. He’s already done a few rap songs himself; here’s his song called ‘Worried About Tomorrow’, featuring Privaledge:

10.What’s the reason for the number 35?

Kevin Durant wears the number 35 on his jersey in honor of his childhood coach and mentor Charles Craig, who died at the age of 35.
